In mid-October, John Brown raided Harpers Ferry. He was planning to seize the garrison and distribute the weapons among slaves to start a series of uprisings. He did succeed in capturing the arsenal but was immediately surrounded by forces commanded by Robert E. Lee. He was tried for treason and upon his execution, he became a martyr. This caused the South to militarize in case of any more of these raids.
