This publication made known all the horrible things about being a slave. Stowe wrote this book in reaction to the recently tightened slave laws brought by Turner's Rebellion. This show of horrors split up the North and the South even more. Northerners felt like their eyes had been opened while the Southerners saw this as slanderous.
