during the 1858 Illinois state election campaign Lincoln and Douglas had 7 debates, these debates were over decisions needing to be made on slavery. These debates were part of a much larger campaign, and although Lincoln did not win the senators seat he gained a reputatiion in the North and was invited to campaign for the Republican party that eventually led to his Presidency.
