aug 8, 1846 - The Wilmot Provisco
Description:
David Wilmot, an antislavery Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania, proposed the Wilmot Provisco, which placed a ban on slavery in any territory gained from the Mexican-American War. Whigs and antislavery Democrats in the House of Representatives quickly passed the bill, dividing the Congress along sectional lines. A few pro-slavery northern senators joined their southern colleagues to kill the provisco which caused a great division creating two feuding groups.
