The main competitors included Senator Lewis Cass of Michigan who was nominated by the Democrats and General Zachary Taylor who was nominated by The Whigs. Taylor won the presidency election. The division of the North and South completely changed the dynamics of national politics. Taylor was committed to the defense of slavery in the South but not the territories. This let him have supporters in both the North and the South. Taylor and the other newly elected officials were starting to focus more on the slavery issue and it would push more towards the Civil War.
