may 1, 1960 - U-2 Incident
Description:
After planning to shut down the U-2 program, Eisenhower wanted to get one last flight in. This proved to be a terrible idea as the plane is shot down and the pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was taken prisoner. He was sentenced to 10 years in a Soviet prison but 18 months later he was released after being swapped for a Soviet spy that the US had caught.
