jan 1, 1530 - Syphilis

Description:

Name came from a poem Girolamo wrote called Syphilis Sive Morbus Gallicus in 1530. Treponema palladium is spiral shaped bacterium = spirochete. Motile; moves around following it’s corkscrew shape. Incredibly fragile-can only survive inside the human host. Humans are the only host of the bacteria and it dies once it gets outside of the human body. Scientists are unable to grow the bacteria in a lab any way. Primary syphilis is hard, painless, with sharp borders. It starts within 2-6 weeks characterized as a painless sore (called a chancre) at the site of infection. The sore will go away on its own. Secondary syphilis shows up about 1-3 months after initial infection characterized by a rash all over the body. The immune system will clear the body and get rid of the rash on its own.
