Firland was one of many sanatoria that were created to meet the needs of TB patients in WA state
Leading founder: Horace Henry (1844-1928) whose son Walter died of TB
The sanatorium opened May 2nd, 1911.
Patients were housed in open-air cottages
Nursing staff was initially to sleep on the floor.
No pave road connected Seattle and the hospital compound.
Supplies were sent via trolley.
