President Lyndon B. Johnson's role in the Civil Rights Movement was him finishing what President Kennedy started. Johnson felt that he owed it to Kennedy to pass the act. After Kennedy's assassination, when Johnson was sworn in, he announced that his vision was to see "an end to poverty and racial injustice."
