Description:

This was the beginning of Lewis and Clark's 2 year expedition through the western United States. They were doing this under President Jefferson's orders, and at their completion the west was opened up for trade. This was significant in national identity because of the results, which included Americans practicing "manifest destiny" and moving to form new lives in the west.
