jan 1, 1994 - The Green Knight by Iris Murdoch

Description:

Iris Murdoch's novel, The Green Knight, is ultimately a spin on the story Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. While both stories focus on "a single blow to the head," The Green Knight is set in contemporary London and instead of King Arthur accepting the challenge of striking the Green knight, the character in this contemporary novel, Graffee, attempts to kill his younger brother and a stranger, Mir, intervenes, receives the blow, and is left for dead. Murdoch's intent was to combine the Arthurian style with contemporary drama. She focuses on being philosophically realistic while also trying to maintain the original storyline. This novel can be categorized as post-modern due to the paradoxical and authorial reflections that is provides. Murdoch gives this original, archetypal story a dramatic twist that causes the audience to speculate on fantasy and reality. This text is still relevant today because it branches out of the traditional modernistic views. Murdoch's ability to combine two completely different styles allow readers to remember her name and ability in literature.
