mar 2, 1713 - Peace of Utrecht gives asiento to Britain
Description:
Spain was involved in the West African slave trade for centuries, known as the asiento. With the victory of Britain in the War of the Spanish Sucession, these rights were given to Britain. The Atlantic Slave Trade continued to prosper after Britain gained control, with many slaves going to the Southern colonies. Brazil continued to buy many slaves. It would take decades until an abolitionist movement in Britain would oppose slavery.
