sep 8, 1713 - Apostolic Constitution Unigenitus condemns Jansenist Pasquier Quesnal

Description:

Pope Clement XI issued this to end the dissemination of the Jansenist religious movement among both the French clergy and laity. The papacy continued in its role in ensuring orthodoxy in the Catholic Church, not tolerating heretical movements that seemed similar to Calvinism. Just Martin Luther's theology was condemned by Exsurge Domine, so was Pasquier Quesnal's propositions condemned. Despite meeting initial resistance from a few bishops and French Parlements, Jansenism would largely fade away despite its popularity. For the most part it met the same fate as the Arianism or Catharism of prior centuries, but some aspects would reemerge in the future.
