This was a strike. This happened during march- September, 1886. The reason they went on strike was because the Knights of Labor & Gould's Union Pacific had reached upon an agreement that would include the principle that not a single man should be discharged without any due notice & any type of investigation. This strike failed and got disbanded afterwards, so there really wasn't no resolution.
