Description:

6 Important Facts:

1.) The name "United Nations" was coined by Roosevelt during he Declaration by United Nations of January 1 1942.

2.) Representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. These delegates deliberated on the proposals worked out by the representatives of China, the UK, the US, and the Soviet Union.

3.) The Charter was signed on June 26th 1945 by the representatives of the 50 countries. Poland, not represented at the Conference, signed it later and became one of the original 51 members.

4.)The UN came into existence on October 24, 1945 , when the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the UK, the US, and the majority of the other countries.

5.) There were at least seven forerunners to the UN.

6.) The Roosevelt administration attempted to avoid Woodrow Wilson's mistakes in selling the League of Nations to the Senate. It sought to bipartisan support and in September 1943 the Republican Party endorsed US participation in a postwar international organization, leading to bipartisan support. The Senate approved the UN Charter on July 28, 1945 with a vote of 89 to 2.
