On April 2, 1917, Wilson went before a special joint session of Congress and asked for a declaration of war against Germany, stating: “The world must be made safe for democracy.”In the Senate, 82 were in favor for the war, while only 6 senators were against. In the House of Representatives, 373 were in favor of war against Germany while 50 were opposed.
