Events- This happens when a Pro-slavery member of Congress, Preston Brooks, attacked Senator Charles Sumner with a cane. This happened after Sumner had given a speech that blamed the slavery supporters for all the violence that happened in Kansas.
Effects- This led to the Civil war , because it was the first time that violence had erupted in the higher parts of the government. This meant that things were getting tense and it would eventually erupt. The U.S was extremely divided at this point.
