jan 1, 1848 - The Wilmot Proviso

Description:

People Involved-
The Wilmot Proviso was a piece of legislation that was created by David Wilmot. If passed, it would outlawed slavery in the lands that were gained from the war. Even Though Wilmot pushed hard for it to pass, all attempts failed.

Although the act did not pass, this Proviso played a major role in the beginning of the Civil War. It was one of the first times that there was a major discussion of secession.
