feb 13, 313 - Edict of Milan Tolerance of Christianity legalized outside of Italy

Description:

Having long struggled with Christian revolts for centuries as a result of religious repression, Emperor Constantine declares that all Roman territories outside of Italy are now legally bound to tolerate Christianity.

Within Italy, however, he decrees that Romans must continue to worship and pay tribute to Roman gods, and Christian travelers to Italy will have to pay their respects to the Roman gods within a limit appropriate to their faith. Furthermore, Roman governors of imperial provinces are explicitly forbidden from worshipping the Christian god.
