Natalie Tennant was the first woman selected to be the Mountaineer in 1990. She said of her experience as the mascot for WVU, "Some fans did not believe the iconic WVU Mountaineer could be represented by a woman. I was spit on, called names and told to go back to the kitchen. I didn’t let it get to me. My pride in my school never faltered.
