jan 1, 1916 - Margaret Sanger opens the birth control clinic in Brooklyn.
Description:
Margaret Sanger opens the first birth control clinic in Brooklyn and within 10 days is arrested. She continued to fight to establish women's right to control their own bodies and opens another clinic, with legal support, in 1923. This movement not only endorsed educating women about existing birth control methods. It also spread the conviction that meaningful freedom for modern women meant they must be able to decide for themselves whether they would become mothers, and when.
More women health care professionals opened women’s clinics to provide birth control and family planning counseling — and to offer abortion services — for low-income women. These clinics provided a safe place to discuss a wide range of health concerns and experiment with alternative forms of treatment.
