jun 24, 1497 - John Cabot Reaches Canada

Description:

Although Christopher Columbus had reportedly reached North American land in 1492, John Cabot, an Italian explorer working under England is sent to find the new world by Henry VII. Cabot's plan then was to sail straight west of Ireland which is much further north than Columbus had previously done in hopes of finding a whole new area.1 He ends up landing somewhere in Newfoundland which at the time hadn't been discovered by any European. This is a significant time in the history of Canada for not only the land being first discovered by Europeans but also because it was discovered by the British and ruled by them from 1763 up until the Canadian Confederation in 1867.
