Victor Emmanuel II became King of Sardinia in the Piedmont Region of Italy. with Napoleon and Camillo Cavour as prime minister, the Austrians were pushed out, expanding to a large amount of the Peninsula. The first Italian Parliament proclaimed Victor Emmanuel II king of Italy in 1861. In 1870, Italy annexed Rome, reuniting all of the Italian peninsula.
