In Austria there were many ethnic groups because of the large area it covered. The Hapsburg rulers refused to consider liberal demands, which caused the nationalists to want self-government. Revolts broke out in 1848, but the Hapsburg government shut it down. Hungarians wanted to rule themselves, so Austria and Hungary reached a compromise. This was dual monarchy.
