aug 18, 1920 - 19th Amendment is Ratified

Description:

On August 18th, 1920, all woman in America officially had the right to vote. However the battle to earn this right had been going on for many decades.Ever since African Americans gained the right to vote in 1870, many women felt angered over the fact that slaves were now capable of voting, but they still couldn't. Women began protesting by petitioning. Women involved in the military would use parades, silent vigils and hunger strikes to raise awareness for the cause. Many were met with heckling, physical abuse and even jail sentences. The amendment was introduced to Congress as early as 1878 but wasn't ratified for another 42 years. Once the amendment was put into effect, many suffragists felt that all their hard work had finally paid off.
