The Battle of Manzikert occurred on August 26, 1071, just outside of Manzikert. This battle is known to be the beginning of the end for the Byzantine Empire. The battle was between the Byzantine Empire (lead by Romanus IV Diogenes) and the Seljuq Turks (lead by the sultan Alp-Arslan). The Byzantine Empire was defeated in this battle, but with relatively few casualties.
