In 535 Justinian I and the Byzantine Empire fought the Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy. Justinian's goal was to recover provinces lost from the Western Roman Empire. The war lasted about 19 years and the Byzantine empire was successful. However, their success was short lived when the Lombards invaded and gained control of Italy in 568 C.E
