What: With Germany divided between many other empires, Bismarck started a war with an outside enemy to rally all Germans behind with nationalism
When: Germany became its own empire on January 18, 1871
Where: The Declaration of this unification was proclaimed in the Palace at Versailles, France.
Why: Bismarck wanted to further humiliate France by showing that Prussia had more power to unify a whole large area of Europe.
