apr 15, 1632 - Jesuits Arrive in New France

Description:

Jesuits arrival in new France served a number of purposes. One reasons priests entered new France was to teach the indigenous the ways of catholicism but also to map Canada and learn the ways that the indigenous people of new France lived. This as important because the imposition of christianity was unethical of France and also introduced diseases to the various indigenous communities of new France. Frances attempts to culturally assimilate the indigenous group into their culture also laid foundations for the residential schools that would come later down the road. another consequence of jesuits and other settlers coming in contact with the indigenous was virgin soil epidemics in which indigenous people coming in contact with foreign diseases experience an 80%-90% mortality rate. The contact with the drench was overall catastrophic to the indigenous communities.
