mar 21, 1804 - The Napoleonic Code Enacted

Description:

On March 21, 1804, Napoleon instituted his own set of laws in France as well as other countries called The Napoleonic Code. The Napoleonic code's main goal was to preserve essential Revolutionary ideas such as equality for all. Napoleon kept these ideals present through laws of equality over law, no privilege of birth, freedom of religion, separation of the church and state, freedom of occupation, and laws made to strengthen the family. Despite the success the Napoleonic code had in creating equality between estates, the code had some weakness regarding laws stating the lack of rights women had. The laws said women could not vote, a woman must obey her husband, unmarried women have no rights, and other rules giving men more power in the family.
