jun 20, 1948 - Currency Reform
Description:
The Deutsche Mark was officially introduced on Sunday, June 20th 1948 by Ludwig Erhard. The old Reichsmark and Rentenmark were exchanged for the new currency. Its intention was to protect Western Germany from a second wave of hyperinflation. Initially, it was only distributed in the zones of Germany controlled by Britain, U.S. and France, this act angered the Soviet Union who saw this as a threat. As a result, Stalin decided to cut off all access to road, rail, and canal links for the western zones and western Berlin, which then lead to the Berlin Blockade.
