jul 3, 1608 - Founding of Quebec
by Champlain
Description:
Champlain attempted to create the first permanent settlement in Canada with an agricultural focus instead of relying on shipped resources. In 1608 he founded Quebec, and went to work establishing a self-sustaining colony.
The alienating food of the Indigenous people meant that the French sought to grow more common food from their homeland, leading to the Columbian Exchange, where European biota was introduced to the North American landscape.
The exchange would have lasting effects, the largest of which being the carrying over of the smallpox disease that decimated many Indigenous populations.
