jan 1, 1831 - Nat Turner's Rebellion
Description:
Nat Turner believes he's received a revelation from God and, after and eclipse, gathers 60 black people (he hoped to gather hundreds) and kills 55 white people. At least 40 black people are hung, 15 of their heads are put on stakes as a warning, and Turner is hung. As a result, southern states decide to toughen their slave codes, limit black movement, restrict slave worship and assembly, and prohibit anyone from teaching slaves to read.
