jan 14, 1493 - The Treaty of Tordesillas

Description:

A line was drawn by the Pope down the middle of the world, everything to the left was Spain's, everything to the right was Portugal's. The Pope did not want two large Catholic countries fighting, as it would weaken the Catholic name at the time of the rising Muslim expansion. This meant that Portugal now owned the route to India, and claim South America. The French English and Dutch did not like the line, as they did not think that it was fair to now belong to Spain. They would also be excluded from any new discoveries. This resulted in centuries of conflict. The French focus on the Noth as they do not believe SPain actually owns all of it, and they discover Newfoundland. The Dutch are the first to set foot into New York/New Jersey.
