Description:

After the French Revolution, France changed from a monarchy to a democracy. Dressing like royalty and upper classes was frowned on throughout Europe. The rise of the middle class meant that many people could afford to buy new clothes more often. Men’s fashions included the cutaway jacket, men began wearing trousers, vest, and coats all of the same color. Women’s fashions featured a raised waistline inspired by Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon. This style is known as empire. Gradually dresses became fuller and would feature a bustle that would give fullness to the back of the garment. Tightly laced corsets were essential. Dresses had high necklines and long sleeves Young women that worked in factories and offices began to wear simple skirts and tailored white blouses
