sep 30, 1847 - The Geysers Discovered
Description:
In 1847, William Bell Elliot “stumbled” upon a valley literally steaming from geothermal vents. This valley was north of what would become San Francisco, California. Elliot dubs this valley the “Gates of Hell”, and will later be known as The Geysers. This discovery is crucial to the developement of geothermal energy usage because without Elliot’s discovery, The Geysers Hotel Resort would never have been built and The Geysers would not be the power plant field that they are today.
