jan 1, 1834 - The Zollverein

Description:

After the Concert of Europe, Prussia intended to exclude Austria from influencing and trading with the new German States. The first step it took to accomplish this was to set up a customs union in 1834 that regulated trade in the German States. This allowed them to increase their own influence on Germany while simultaneously undermining the influence of Austria. The Zollverein was ultimately successful in excluding Austria from trade and influence in Germany and, combined with the Seven Weeks’ War and the Franco-Prussian War, eventually lead to German Unification.
