nov 6, 1860 - Presidential Election of 1860

Description:

Abraham Lincoln was elected as the President of the United States during his race against Stephen Douglas. Lincoln was the Republican Party's nomination and Douglas was the Democratic Party's nomination. Lincoln ended up the winner, even though he didn't get the majority of the electoral votes and didn't receive a single electoral vote from the South. These circumstances made the South feel, more than ever, that their voices were being ignored and not heard in government. The election of someone who supported emancipation of the slaves as the President of the country was the last straw for the South. That same year, South Carolina was the first Southern state to secede, quickly followed by the remaining states of the South, creating the Confederacy and setting off the bloodiest war in US history, the Civil War.
