apr 19, 1775 - The Battles of
Lexington and Concord
Description:
The ongoing atmosphere of extreme tension was almost overwhelming in Boston. The British General Thomas Gage, who was hoping to avoid rebellion, took a force of regular troops on a march to Concord, Massachusetts to confiscate a large amount of munitions stored there.
The march was about twenty miles, and the well organized Minutemen Militia of the colonies had been given plenty of warning and had ample time to prepare to receive them.
Around 400 militia from the Concord area had gathered to meet the British when they arrived at about 8:00 AM. After a battle that saw the British in a bad position, they decided to return to Boston.
They were constantly harassed and fired upon by thousands of minutemen from all directions as they struggled to retreat.
In the end, a total of about 393 men were killed and wounded on both sides, with the vast majority being British.
The Revolution had begun.
