jun 22, 1774 - The Quebec Act of 1774

Description:

Labeled by colonial America as one of the "Intolerable Acts",
"The purpose of the Quebec Act was to:
Extend the Province of Quebec to include territory west to the Mississippi, north to Hudson's Bay territory, and the islands in the mouth of the St. Lawrence
Passed religious reforms that were highly favorable to the Catholic majority in Quebec and allowed Catholics to hold public offices"

The law was unacceptable to colonial America because they felt it denied them lands that had been promised to them. The very liberal religious terms granted the Catholics were also a source of contention for many Protestants.

While the law was quite favorable for religious freedom, it was not so for government. The province was denied the right to an elected assembly, they were ruled by a Royal governor, and all laws were subject to approval and/or royal rejection.

Whatever its shortcomings, the law did serve a great purpose for Britain in that it kept the French Canadians loyal to Britain during the Revolution.
