On July 26, George B. McClellan replaces Irvin McDowell as Commander of the Union Army. McClellan had been very succesful during the Western Virginia Operations, and success was just what the Union needed after the defeat of Bull Run. McClellan spent the entire summer shaping up the Union Army and boosting the morale.
