The Sack of Rome on 6 May 1527 was a military event carried out in Rome by the mutinous troops of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Victory over the French at Pavia in 1525 left the forces of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, dominant in Italy. Rome was not, however, attacked on the emperor's orders, but on the initiative of imperial troops angry at not being paid.Added to timeline:
