may 9, 1968 - The Troubles

Description:

The Troubles, or also known as The Northern Ireland Conflct, was a long series of violent conflicts that happened between the Catholics and also the Protestants over the control of government of Northern Ireland. The conflict began in 1968 with the civil rights march in Londonberry, when two opposing protesting groups were planning to take the same route. The Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association were asked by the Derry Housing Action Committee to hold a march. When Northern Ireland’s minister heard that the group was about to cross paths, he issued an order that would prevent all marches with the limits of the scheduled route. Unfortunately, they were met with police when they approached the area. Along with batons, police also used extreme measures like enormous water cannons and also dogs to do disband the marchers. This only led to more violent scuffles. It would eventually conclude with the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
