jan 1, 800 BC - BOOK OF KELLS

Description:

The book of Kells is the world’s oldest book. Written in 800 A.D. in Ireland, the Book of Kells contains the first four Gospels in Latin written on calfskin with decorative illustrations. Research shows that “The scribes and artists who created the Book were Columbian monks who lived in a monastery on the remote island of Iona, off the west coast of Scotland. The monastery was founded late in the sixth century by an Irish monk, St Colm Cille.” It is the most lavish manuscript to survive the Middle Ages.
