An atomic bomb was also dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. Around 220,000 people died.
The Cold War concept that this event matches is deterrence. This is because this use of an atomic bomb warned any other countries not to attack the US, as they wouldn't hesitate to nuke them.
