may 9, 1979 - Margaret Thatcher First Female Prime Minister

Description:

Margaret Thatcher became the first female prime minister in the UK during the 20th century. Known as the “Iron Lady,” Margaret Thatcher “influenced trade unions, privatized industries, and also fought a war to maintain control over the Falkland Islands. She is said to be the longest-serving British prime minister within the 20th century. Throughout her political career, she wanted to limit government expenditures. This idea, along with a few others, became known as Thatcherism. During her years as prime minister, Thatcher believed in a small state but free markets. Instead of regulating the lives of the people and businesses, government was to have little to no interference. Individuals could now make their own choices. Thatcherism believed in monetarism, low-taxation, privatization of state-owned industries, and rolling back the frontiers of the state. Margaret Thatcher being the first female prime minister became known all over the world. Ideally, she showed women that they could become high levels within the government. She helped increase women’s exploration in their personal and career freedom. Thatcher was in office from 1979-1990, so many of the literary novels featured her or her policies in some way: Buddha of Suburbia, Running Wild, and What a Carve Up.
