mar 22, 1765 - Stamp Act
Description:
The Stamp Act put a tax on all legal papers, newspapers and pamphlets. The colonists were mad about this tax because these items were things everyone used in their everyday life, and the colonists believed that the only people who had the right to tax them were the legislatures that they elected. The tax revenue was also being used to pay the British army that was in the colonies, but the colonists didn't see a reason for the army to be stationed there in the first place.
"The Stamp Act, however, was viewed as a direct attempt by England to raise money in the colonies without the approval of the colonial legislatures. If this new tax were allowed to pass without resistance, the colonists reasoned, the door would be open for far more troublesome taxation in the future."
