Description:
Taney presided that the object of government was topromote general happiness over the rights of contact and property. A state had the right to amend a cotnract if such action was necessary to advance the well-being of the community. Two companies fighting over the right to a monopoly. Charles River had a toll bridge with a long standing charter. The other company was going to have a toll free which would reduce the value of the first companies.
