In 1922, John D. built The Geysers Hotel Resort. This resort was powered by a geothermal power plant, which was the first of its kind in the USA. This power plant was located at The Geysers, California and was short lived because it couldn’t compete with cheaper fossil fuels. This resort, although a failure, was very important to future engineers because it pointed out one of the biggest downfalls of any energy source, if its expensive and ineffective, no one will choose it over something tried and true.<image: The Geysers Hotel Resort>
