jan 29, 1585 - Joachim Gaunse lands on Roanoke Island

Description:

Sir Walter Raleigh, one of the favorite explorers of Queen Elizabeth I, got a royal patent to explore the Virginia territory for permanent settlement. Joachim Gaunse (mining engineer) was recruited to participate in the journey. He is the first recorded Jew to set foot in North America. However, he was almost arrested and killed later in his life due to his Jewish belief.
